And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that His justice cannot sleep for ever.
- Thomas Jefferson, Notes on the State of Virginia, 1781

In the beginning of the contest with Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayers in this room for the divine protection. Our prayers, sir, were heard and they were graciously answered.…Have we now forgotten this powerful Friend? Do we imagine that we no longer need His assistance? I have lived a long time, and the longer I live the more convincing proof I see of this truth, that God governs in the affairs of men.…We have been assured, sir, that 'except the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain that build it,' and without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel.
- Benjamin Franklin, at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, 1787

A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy. While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue then will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader. - Samuel Adams, letter to James Warren, February 12, 1779

It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so. - Mark Twain

All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then success is sure. - Mark Twain

Always do right, this will gratify some and astonish the rest. - Mark Twain

To whom it obviously doesn’t concern

With the 2015 NFL free agency set to officially start in a few hours, I must say that I am sick and tired of these professional athletes continuing to talk about that elusive Super Bowl ring.

Before I delve further into my frustration about the ring talk, I truly understand why professional athletes chase the money.  They have families to take care of and their own wants and needs, etc.  Trust me; there is no loyalty between any employer (team) and employee (player) in today’s work environment.  Employees are just a number to their employer, so you got to get yours while you can because as the cliché goes, money talks.

Now back to my frustration about the ring talk.  I hear too many players talk about chasing that Super Bowl ring and I need to go where I have a chance to win.  Hey, I know you’re lying because your lips are moving professional athlete, look around your locker room!  I’d say there’s a pretty good chance you are closer to being where you can win than you think!

If you’re going to talk about chasing that ring and you are with a team that is on the door step, remember, actions speak louder than words.  Restructure the contract, take a reasonable pay cut, do something that backs up what you are saying.

I’m no expert on professional athletes, I’ve never played any sport as a professional, I don’t know what situation professional athletes are in and I’m not trying to draw the ire of social media.  I just want the professional athletes to stop the ring talk when it is obvious they are chasing the money.  You get paid MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO PLAY A GAME!  Think about that, MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO PLAY A GAME!

Yours truly,

Busted Brackets

ESPN is reporting that out of over 11 million brackets submitted in their online challenge only 612 picked the final four correctly.  I have to admit it, I'm still struggling just a bit that 612 people actually picked UConn and Kentucky to make it to the Final Four.  Picking one of the two, I think I could deal with, but to still have 612 people pick both of them!  Hopefully this little tidbit will help you ease your mind on your bracket picks and you can sleep better.  As for me, it's another night with unisom and that pesky 20/20 hindsight!

Jefferson's Poplar Forest

If you are a fan of history, architecture or Thomas Jefferson, I encourage you to plan a visit to Poplar Forest.  This was Thomas Jefferson's retreat home and it is a beautiful home.

Here is an excerpt from a term paper I wrote on Jefferson's architecture while at King College:
At Poplar Forest, a sense of total relaxation lingers in the air.  There is no worry of interruptions or constant care-taking of the grounds.

I've added some photos from my recent visit there.
